Cartoon: A for Effort

Cartoon of teacher passing test to student. Student says, "If I do this test with one eye closed, one hand tied behind my back and hopping on one foot, do I get an A for effort?"

Students spend most of their educational career figuring out how to ace the test with the least amount of studying. But I bet if you'd issue physical challenges while they took the test, you'd get quite a few takers. You bet I would've tried it.

Cartoon: Magnify That Brain

Cartoon of teacher and student. Student says, “Can I go to the science lab? I can’t handle your tests unless I magnify my brain."

I also drew this for Illustration Friday. This week's word is "magnify."

Cartoon: Love and Chips

Cartoon of two boys eating. One says, "You can't find love in a bag of chips. But chips and salsa come close."

You guessed it. Chips and salsa are one of my favorite foods. Don't worry, though. It just can't compete with real love.

Cartoon: Nightmares in Flight

Cartoon of two men boarding a jet plane. One says, “We can’t take this flight, Earl! She was voted the worst flight attendant of all time at travelnightmares.com!”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

It's good to know some of the issues we had thirteen years ago are still around. Airline service can be nonexistent. Still, I wonder if the flight attendants are just as much of a victim when they have to wait six hours on the tarmac like everyone else.

Cartoon in "Church Laughs" Newsletter

The Church Laughs newsletter at Christianity Today just featured my cartoon for this week.

Anybody need a chocolate on their pillow?

Cartoon: Nagging Material

Cartoon of two women. One says, "You are almost marriage material. All we need to do is teach you to nag."

Goals

"Set your goals high, and don't stop 'til you get there." Bo Jackson

Cartoon: Bring your papers

Cartoon of dog in airport. Guard says, “I’m sorry, sir! But even if you are a mongrel, I must see your papers.”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

Security is much more advanced (hopefully) since I penned this cartoon. At least the equipment looks more like something out of Star Trek. I wish they worked like the transporter instead of just beeping angrily at me when I leave my cell phone on my person!

Caution to the Wind

Caution to the wind

Cartoon of man and woman. Man says, "Next time, when I throw caution to the wind, I'll make sure it's not a headwind. "

I drew this for Illustration Friday. This week's word is, "caution."

Cartoon: Computing on the farm

Cartoon of two farmers. One says, “I don’t know what to do. The cows prefer Windows ’95, the pigs go for the Mac and don’t even ask me what the chickens use!”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages." (Bet you can tell from the reference to Windows '95!)

Cartoon: Authenticity

Cartoon of two boys. One says, "I've been looking for authenticity. So far, all I know is it isn't in any discount department store."

Every time I go to a department store, I wonder how many people are looking for something that just isn't in all those goods. You know, things like love, peace and authenticity. After all, money can't buy me love!

Cartoon: Advertising on the Web

Cartoon of woman and man at computer. Woman says, “Do you think we could use the Web to advertise my beauty and charm school?”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages." That has to be three to four lifetimes in the Internet world!

Cartoon: Prepped for school

Cartoon of two students. One says, “I'm all ready for school. I have my lunch, number two pencils and an updated résumé!”

I wasn't the hyper-prepared student in school. I was the one praying the teacher wouldn't call on me. It's not that I didn't know the answer. I just didn't want to die of embarrassment when my voice would squeak like a mouse who just inhaled helium.

Wrapped Up in Apologies

Student Apologies, originally uploaded by speartoons.

Cartoon: Student says to teacher, "For anything I may do this school year, I'd like to offer a blanket apology."

Also works for Illustration Friday. This week's word is "wrapped." This guy is wrapped up in getting his apologies out of the way first. There's a few sports figures and politicians that could learn from that. Just apologize in advance when you're elected or get that multi-million dollar contract.

Please ask before using this cartoon. I can provide a watermarked free image upon request.

A Dog's Birthday Party

Cartoon of two dogs. One says, "If a dog year is equal to seven people years, we should be getting birthday parties every eight weeks."

This cartoon is copyrighted. I can provide a watermark free cartoon upon request.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator.

Cartoon: A boring summer

Cartoon of two boys. One says to the other, “What a boring summer! Not one of us has had a trip to the emergency room.”

When you're a kid, you get discouraged because nothing exciting happened all summer. When you're a parent, you're praying nothing exciting happens to the kids all summer. Excitement can be quite expensive

It's hard to believe it's almost time for school. Let the excitement begin!

Cartoon: Dentist appointment

Cartoon: Dentist appointment, originally uploaded by speartoons.

Cartoon of dentis to patient: "You're teeth look great. But it looks like we need to extract your tongue."

My trip to the dentist was okay, but strange thoughts happen when you are in the dentist's chair. My tongue is fine, however.

This works for Illustration Friday. This week's word is, "impatience." It's hard to be patient when a dentist is inserting strange tools in your mouth!

I drew this in Adobe Iluustrator CS3.

Mike Lynch Cartoons: Too Many Sketchbooks

Mike Lynch has a great post about every cartoonist's dilemma: how to make the sketchbook work.

Is one enough? Can you ever have too many? I like Mike's approach. My tendency has been to have one sketchbook and then put everything in there. It works for me, but perhaps Mike has a better idea.

Cartoon: Tastes in television

Cartoon of girl and teddy bear. Girl says “I don’t like your taste in television.”

I wonder what the bear wants to watch? The obvious choice would be "Animal Planet." Then again, maybe he's a Sponge Bob fan.

You know it's getting close to the end of a school break when kids argue with even inanimate objects. If the object brings the kid to tears, then you know it's time for a nice, family walk around the neighborhood.

Cartoon: But he followed me home

Cartoon of Dad, son and raccoon. Dad is angry. Son says to Dad, "But he followed my home."

When I went to camp, there were a few critters I would have liked to take home. None of them were within the cabin. Those type of critters tried to come home with me on their own.

Instead of taking a raccoon home as a souvenir, I opted for the t-shirt instead. They were easier to wash.

Cartoon: parenting butterflies

Cartoon of caterpillar child to parent butterfly. Caterpillar says, "Nag, nag, nag! I can't wait until I get a chrysalis of my own."

Insects must have it easy. Even though their parenting skills are nonexistent, they don't have to deal with a generation gap.

Then again, they don't know the joys of parenting either. I guess it's about how much you invest. Go ahead and give your time. Sooner or later, that caterpillar will emerge as a stunning butterfly.
