Webcomic: Internet Love

Cartoon of a husband and wife. The wife says, “I’m sorry, Roger. I just have more fun with the Internet that with you.”

This is an illustration I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

I hope Roger and Carol got back together. The Internet is fun for a while, but it can't beat good old fashion human interaction.

New Rider's Publishing and me own the copyright to this image. Please do not use without permission.

Cartoon: Love is a Thing

Cartoon of two boys. One says, “Love is weird. All I know is people say it's a many-splintered thing.”

I thought of this cartoon when I heard some kids talking about all the break ups going on. Love has to be more than a feeling, or it doesn't last in the long run, does it?

Cartoon: Spreading the Love

Cartoon of a girl and boy. Girl says, "I'm trying to spread the love. Sticky notes help me do that."

I may have to try this technique today. Where are those sticky notes? I need to write something to my wife today.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS3.

Cartoon: Love and Chips

Cartoon of two boys eating. One says, "You can't find love in a bag of chips. But chips and salsa come close."

You guessed it. Chips and salsa are one of my favorite foods. Don't worry, though. It just can't compete with real love.

Cartoon of man to woman, "I always thought falling head over heels in love was an impossibility."

"Head over heels" has always sounded like an impossible cliche to me. Then again, I guess our heads are always over our heels, right? That must mean everyone has a chance to fall in love.

I originally drew this cartoon several years ago. When Illustration Friday announced this week's word was "impossibility," I went searching through the archives and came up with this one.

Spear Cartoon 3207

Cartoon of a man in his back yard. The neighbor's dog is raising a fit. The man says, "Love your neighbor and put-up with his pooch."

Love towards one's neighbors can be a challenge, especially when he isn't a model citizen. Sometimes, the neighbor can be all right, but his dog may act like an obedience school drop-out.

To all my neighbors, I hope my dog has not been acting like Cujo lately. I promise I will try to be a model citizen. If I fall short a few times, please forgive me. I'll show a little mercy too. Let's face it, we all need that from time to time.

This was a cartoon I drew seven years ago. I updated it and posted it the new version to my website at www.kevinspear.com.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2.

Sketch from sketchbook 0808. A coy boy looks at a running girl. There may be a crush going on, no?

Finding Enemies to Love

Caption: “I learned I need to love my enemies. And lucky you, are the closest thing I have to one!”

"Enemies" is such a strong word for me. Enemies sound like someone is ready to blow me up or engage me in a sword deal on my way to work. Sure, people get on my nerves. I get on people's nerves. Perhaps that's the closest I come to loving an enemy. I better get started.

Psalm 36:5-7

When I read Psalm 36 this morning, the words just inspired me to doodle away.

Looking for love in January

In January, we look for love. We look for something to warm the cold. Success comes by February 14th.

That desert of time between Christmas and Valentine's day is a time when a lot of people do some searching. Luckily, I've already found love. But I remember those cold winter days. I'd shed a tear if it wouldn't freeze to my cheek.

Never as easy as it sounds

Why is the "love your neighbor" thing so hard to do? Why is it whenever I try to love my neighbor, everyone else is on their worst behavior? I can't do it without help, that's for sure!

Smitten: Illustration Friday

I've decided I need to focus more on my illustration. There is a site called Illustration Friday. It gives a topic and illustrators give their take on a word that week. Here is my take on the word, "smitten."

I began with five thumbnail sketches on the topic. I chose the bottom corner one because I liked the way it told a story. What happened before this moment? Will Cupid and the girl win. Is there a conspiracy going on? Stay tuned!
