Cartoon: Preaching on Youtube

Cartoon of two men. One says, "Great sermon. I already uploaded the highlights to Youtube."

Technology is changing the churches I've been in. Almost everyone has a projector now and many have wireless Internet. It makes me wonder how the church will look in twenty years.

I drew this cartoon for The Church of God E-Newsletter.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS3

Cartoon: Recycling Education

Cartoon of two children and an old computer at a bust stop. The caption reads, "Melanie's dad found a unique way to recycle his old computer.

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

When I drew this cartoon, I thought the PC looked somewhat modern. Is that a 3 1/2" or a 5 1/4" floppy drive? Where's the SCSI cable? What do you mean it's wireless?

Cartoon: Birthday cheer

Cartoon of two girls. One says, "Happy Birthday! You don't look a day over seven."

My sister has a birthday today. She looks a little older than seven, but still much younger than me. That's the way it should be. All is right in the world.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS3

Cartoon: Wipe the Slate Clean

Cartoon of a boy and teacher. The boy says, "It's hard to wipe the slate clean when you use a permanent marker."

I've often heard people say, "I'll forgive, but you better believe I won't forget." It is a difficult thing to do, isn't it. If I've slighted you, I hope you've forgotten about it. It wasn't on purpose... honest!

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS3.

Cartoon: Your a Mac, I'm a PC

Cartoon of a couple at a romantic dinner. The man says, “The question remains: can a Mac person and a Windows Person get along in marital bliss?”

This is an illustration I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

I can say a Mac and PC relationship can work beautifully, thank you very much. It has for at least seven of our twenty years.

Romantic Patterns

Cartoon of a boy and dad with flowers. Boy says, "Last night, you two argued. Today, you come home with flowers. I detect a pattern."

Handy tip, guys. Flowers do the trick. And if you ever think it's better to be right than have peace, you'll want to dig a trench because it will be a long, cold war.

I drew this for Illustration Friday. This week's word is "Pattern."

Cartoon: Bad Internet Cooking

Cartoon of wife at computer and husband. Wife cries, “Someone told the gourmet cuisine site about my cooking and now they won’t let me in.”

Bad news travels fast, doesn't it? Especially with the speed of the Internet on the side of the rumor mill.

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

Cartoon: Call from Mom

Cartoon of boy and teacher. Boy says, "I'll answer that in a second. But first, let me take this call from Mom."

It's a good thing I didn't have a cell phone in school. I probably would have been calling for a lifeline every few minutes.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: Cooking Computers

Cartoon of a chef and computer. The chef says, “Welcome, everyone! It’s time for another exciting episode of ‘Silicone Chef.’”

This is an illustration I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

I added the caption recently. It reminded me of all the Food Network's "Iron Chef" episodes my family has watched. Today's secret ingredient is... rawhide! We love how crazy and creative that show can get.

Cartoon: Pointy Homework

Spear-Cartoon_3520

Cartoon of a boy with a test and a dog. Boy says, "For a pointer, you're pretty lousy at pointing out homework answers."

I never used our dog to do my homework. She was a collie and whenever I'd ask a question, she'd just nip at my heels.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: Cover to cover

Cartoon of two boys in school. One says, “I’m going to study this book from cover to cover. So far, I have the copyright page memorized.”

Does anybody read the copyright page? I do! It's chocked full of great information and ISBN numbers. If you don't know what the latter is, you probably don't want to read the copyright page anyway.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: Attitudinal License

Cartoon of two boys playing. One says, "How do they expect me to go the extra mile when I'm not old enough to drive?

It can be tough to go the extra mile, especially when the highway is plugged up. But it's worth it to go that extra distance. That must be why I'm posting a cartoon on Saturday. It's an extra blog post on the Information Superhighway.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: Good Game

Guy says, "Thanks to the best popcorn ever, that was a good game." Yes, it was a rough game tonight. But there's always next week.

Cartoon: Infinite ways

Cartoon of two boys walking. One says, "Today at school, I discovered there are an infinite number of ways to annoy a girl."

Yes, there are an infinite number of ways to annoy people, I'm going to try and find the infinite number of ways to be a blessing today.

This also works for Illustration Friday. This week's word is "infinite."

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: Love is a Thing

Cartoon of two boys. One says, “Love is weird. All I know is people say it's a many-splintered thing.”

I thought of this cartoon when I heard some kids talking about all the break ups going on. Love has to be more than a feeling, or it doesn't last in the long run, does it?

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: Health Care Veggies

Cartoon of mom and son at dinner. Mom says, “It’s MY version of health care reform. Eat your veggies."

My mom was a nurse. This is the kind of thing I could just hear her saying. She would sneak wheat germ and shredded carrots into anything she could. I guess I shouldn't complain. I'm healthy today. Thanks Mom!

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: Video Game Aliens

Cartoon of guy and space alien. Guy says, "“Look! You can’t be an alien! You don’t look like the aliens on any of my video games!”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

I wonder if a space alien would be appalled if it saw how it was depicted in the media. I wonder if they would like "Sector 9?"

Cartoon: Love and Homework

Cartoon of dad and son. Dad says, “Your mom didn't marry me for my hair. It was because I did my homework. Now go do yours.”

I'm sure my dad used this ploy on me. Bless his heart, I never remember him with much hair. But he's always been a hard worker. He's done his homework, and so has Mom. That must be why she married him.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: Bed and Breakfast

Cartoon of man at a bed and breakfast. Man says to caretaker, “I’m not interested in a Bed and Breakfast. Would you have a Lunch and Lounge Package?”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

I've had some nice experiences with bed and breakfast establishments. Still, I've often wondered how long it would take to wear out my welcome. I'm guessing they would kick me out when the check didn't clear.

My Kid Said Blog

I came across the "My Kid Said" blog the other day. This is a fun blog for anyone who knows kids say the darndest things. Beside, you'll see one of my older cartoons on this site.

Picture Book Maker: Helllp! Perspective!

Nathan Clement is a first-class illustrator with tons of talent and an all-around good guy.

His latest post shows how he got some help with a tricky perspective problem. In the process, he revealed a great site from another artist, Julie Duell. Both sites are rich in illustration and art information.

Cartoon: Homework Excuse

Cartoon of a mother and son. Son says, "But if Grandpa says the world is hopeless, what's the point in doing my homework?"

I've heard a lot of negativity lately. The news and commentary can bring people down. Let's not bring down the next generation, shall we? We've been through troubles before and we'll get through the current set of troubles. Hang in there!

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS3

Cartoon: Games at Work

Cartoon of husband and wife in the kitchen. The husband says, “They’re not giving me a raise, but they are letting me play this really cool game at work.”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

I used to design books for a computer games book publisher. It was fun playing video games for research. Too bad I stunk at video games. I knew I was in trouble when my five-year old son started beating me!

Cartoon: Spreading the Love

Cartoon of a girl and boy. Girl says, "I'm trying to spread the love. Sticky notes help me do that."

I may have to try this technique today. Where are those sticky notes? I need to write something to my wife today.

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS3.

Cartoon: The Finest Computer

Cartoon of dad and son. Dad says, “Welcome to the computer age, son! I got you the finest Commodore 64 money can buy.”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

I remember the Commodore 64. A friend had it in college. I was jealous. Does that make me old? I wonder if my son would like a Commodore 64? I'll ask him after he's finished playing on his XBox 360.

Crock pot talk

We've had some friends over tonight. The topic of crock pots and advances in technology came up.Here's an inspired sketch.

Nice day for a reunion

Today was a great day for a reunion. I got to sketch some family members. We were in Ohio State territory so everyone was happy about the football game. Plus the weather was perfect.

It was great being around my wife's family. Everyone is down to earth, laid back and they genuinely care for each other. They've gotten used to me sneaking in a sketch or two of them and they tolerate it quite well.

I drew this in mechanical pencil in my trusty sketchbook.

Cartoon: A Strong Dog

Spear-Cartoon_3519

Cartoon of boy with pets. Boy says to dog, "Look at it this way. It takes a strong dog to admit the cat rules the house."

No doubt about it. In our house, the cat rules the roost. The only exception is when our dog is able to ambush the cat. Corners are very good for that.

I also drew this for Illustration Friday. This week's word is "strong."

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: An Accountant's Web Site

Cartoon of man at computer. He says, “I think I found your brother, the accountant’s web site.”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

The computer and my concept of web sites have changed since then. I couldn't have seen very many of them at that time. Many had sparse graphics or none at all. Don't you just love sites with lots of graphics? Me too.

Cartoon: New Cell Phone

Cartoon of boy with cell phone. He says to a baby, "Dad won't upgrade his cell phone until it's broken. Here! Chew on it for a while."

My daughter has been after me to get a new cell phone. Hey! What's wrong with the one I have? It still works. My fashion conscious daughter does not seem to buy that argument. I may be starting to show my age. *Sigh!*

I drew this in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Cartoon: The Great Computerized Novel

Cartoon of angry man at pc. Man says, “How am I supposed to write the great American novel when my computer thinks my manuscript stinks?”

This is a classic cartoon I did back in 1996 for the sixth edition of the "New Rider's Internet Yellow Pages."

No matter how far technology advances, computers will never be able to write the great novel. Why? Because none of us ever know what it is until we see it. The arts are just too wonderfully mysterious.

In Michael Gelb's book, "How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci," he called the mysterious, "sfumato." It means going up in smoke. It's the ambiguity and uncertainty in the arts. No computer will be able to mimic that. A PC will go up in smoke if it has to embrace ambiguity.
