Webcomic: The Plague of Chores

Cartoon of Moses and a boy. Boy says, “It’s not fair being Moses’ son! If I don’t do my chores, you send a plague."

Have you ever noticed life isn't fair if you make someone work? What they're really saying is "It's only fair if I don't have to lift a finger!" Oops! Looks like I better change my attitude and do a little more work!

I drew this web comic in Adobe Illustrator CS2

Comic: Carnivore Cruise

Cartoon of an alligator and Noah. The caption says, "Despite Al's friendly manner, Noah turned down his request to room with the sheep."

Whenever I heard about Noah's Ark, I often wondered how much work it would have taken to keep the carnivores and the livestock separated. It would be mighty hard to keep the fox from the hens if they're shared a table and lounge chairs on the lido deck.

E4674 page 07 hidden picture

E4674 page 07 hidden picture, originally uploaded by speartoons.

I illustrated this activity for this page. This is in pen and ink with a crow quill pen. There are six items hidden in the picture; an oil lamp, rope, donkey, Bible and ladybug.

Dreams Work

My pastor, Jim Lyon at Madison Park Church of God, had a great sermon based on Genesis 37:18-20.

When a dream comes from God, it will prevail, despite our stumbling and balking.

Here are my notes.

An Angel visits Zechariah

This is part of the Christmas story. An angel visits Zechariah and tells him he will be a father.

Zechariah says, "How can this be true? My wife Elizabeth and I are too old to have a baby."

There are five items to find in the picture: a teddy bear, baby bottle, rattle, spoon and Bible.

This is part of "My Very Own Bulletin," and is available through Warner Press.

Last Supper Activity

Here's an illustration for "The Last Supper." You are looking for five things that are different in the two pictures.

The is from "My Very Own Bulletin," and is available from Warner Press.

Nehemiah Builds a Wall

I am working on children's bulletins right now. This is an activity I just finished for the story of Nehemiah.

This part talks about the people rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. The activity asks you to count the number of spears and bricks in the picture.

Counting "Kevin Spear" as one of the spears doesn't count!

You can get the "My Very Own Bulletin" from Warner Press.

Hypocricy

Today, my pastor talked about the hypocrisy we can all be guilty of if we live purely by following a rule book and without grace. Sooner or later, we're going to mess up. Then we pretend we are "living right" instead of admitting we fall short. Next thing you know, we're judging others and looking down on them instead of admitting we're just as bad.

So I'll say it right now: I goof up. I fall short. There! That feels better!

Psalm 36:5-7

When I read Psalm 36 this morning, the words just inspired me to doodle away.

Taking Tests

God gave Abraham quite a test! I'm glad the tests I experience are less extreme.

Jacob Hidden Picture

I did this illustration for Warner Press the other day. It's a hidden picture illustration on Genesis 28, Jacob's ladder. I do these illustrations for a children's bulletin book. It's available through WP's bulletin subscription service. So, can you find the five things different in the pictures?

Jonah Boards a ship

This is a sketch based a project I was doing at Warner Press. It is from the story of Jonah.

"But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD."
Jonah 1:3 (niv)

Man! this guy thought the story ended there. Jonah is about to be rudely awaken!

1 Peter 1:13-15

I did this devotional this morning while I was waiting for everyone to get ready for Thanksgiving. It's a good thing for me to remember as I go through the fun of a holiday weekend and the start of the Christmas season. 1 Peter is full of such good stuff. You can tell Peter had lived out his faith and proved his faithfulness through many years.

Stepping Out of Our Comfort Zones

So what's your motivation to step out of the boat this week? Mine came from a sermon courtesy of Jeff Matas. I don't want tredmill spirituality this week. (Or the next week for that matter.)

By the way, Jeff is the guy preaching in the far right drawing. He really does have more hair than that. Too bad for him I didn't have my reading glasses with me.

Get in the Boat!

We had a guest pastor at our church last Sunday named Obadiah Smith. He was speaking on dreams ant his text was in Luke 8:22. It was a great sermon on how our dreams will come true on the other side if we do the following. You can see my sermon notes above. This is how I pay attention and get the most out of a sermon.
  1. Step in the boat (you need to get started!)
  2. Push away
  3. Turn away
  4. Sail away
Yes, we may meet those storms just like Jesus did, but when our dreams are in sync with God's amazing things happen!

Feeding the five thousand healthily!

I keep hearing all the talk about eating a healthy diet. They must assault you with all this information when you reach middle age.

All the food in the past must have been healthier, right? It wasn't processed. So.... if you're feeding five thousand, you want the best in healthy fare.

Official T-shirts

"The disciples felt special when they received their official T-shirts."

I was thinking this week how great it would have been to be Jesus' disciple... I mean, did they know they were part of something really big? Probably not, for they didn't know what was going happen at the end of Jesus' earthly ministry.

Red Sea Crossing

I like this one because it is one of the few where I didn't need a caption. It's fun to write something with a picture-without using any words. It goes against the whole ideal of a blog, doesn't it? That must make me a rebel today.
